INFORMATION ON NEW FUNCTIONALITY for Libraries and Bookstores

Search My Library’s Catalog (Hooks to Holdings) | Order Download

SEARCH MY LIBRARY’S CATALOG (Bowker’s Hooks to Holdings™) - We are pleased to offer this functionality to all libraries that have Z39.50 compliant catalogs that allow remote searching on ISBNs and ISSNs.

Getting Started: It’s Simple! Your License Administrator will need to establish a "Hooks to Holdings" profile for your account. (Who is our License Administrator?)

License Administrators can follow these easy steps to create a "Hooks to Holdings" profile:

Click on the MY ACCOUNT button on the top navigation bar. Select the Detailed Account Information link and log in using the license administrator user name and password, if prompted.
A new page will display. Select the option to "create or modify your Z39.50 Hooks to Holdings Profile"
Complete the profile page and select SAVE
For consortium accounts with multiple catalogs, select the ADD PROFILE button to create additional profiles.

Once a profile is saved, users can select SEARCH MY LIBRARY’S CATALOG on the Search Results page, Title Details area, and LISTS area to launch a search of their catalog.

Bowker’s Hooks to Holdings feature can search on ISBN or ISSN only. For this reason, if your Z39.50 compliant catalog does not support remote searching of ISBNs, “Hooks to Holdings” will not function. Also, if records selected for search do not contain ISBN numbers, “Hooks to Holdings” will not function.

We are currently enhancing "Hooks to Holdings" to search on catalogs that allow remote searching on ISBNs, ISSNs, and/or LCCNs.

What if SEARCH MY LIBRARY’S CATALOG is not functioning?

First, contact your account’s License Administrator. (Who is our License Administrator?)
If a "Hooks to Holdings" profile was created, License Administrator’s should verify that the profile information was filled out completely and correctly. We strongly suggest that License Administrators review this profile information with their Z39.50 staff expert or library automation vendor.
If the profile information is correct, there may be several reasons why the search does not work:

The local server at the library could be down, busy, or experiencing heavy use.
The local catalog may not support remote database searching or remote searching ISBNs or ISSNs.
Z39.50 server port may be a port number not accessible on ChildrensBooksinPrint.com. ChildrensBooksinPrint.com allows searching through server port # 210 only.
Records chosen to search do not contain ISBN numbers.
The port number in the profile is not an accessible port number.
The site is experiencing heavy use, creating response time delays.

ORDER DOWNLOAD – for bookstore and library staff members

ChildrensBooksinPrint.com programmers worked closely with the following library automation vendors and point-of-sale vendors to create download formats specifically for their systems:

Library Systems
- DRA – for use with Classic or Taos systems
- epixtech – for use with Horizon, NOTIS, and Dynix systems
- Innovative Interfaces Inc. – for use with Millennium and INNOPAC systems

Downloading in these vendor-specific formats will allow for easy transfer into your system for ordering.

License Administrators can follow these easy steps to create an Order Download default profile:

Click on the MY ACCOUNT button on the top navigation bar. Select the Detailed Account Information link and log in using the license administrator user name and password, if prompted.
A new page will display. Select the option to "create or modify your Order Download profile."
Complete the profile page (selecting your default vendor and choosing to make downloading in these formats public-accessible or password-protected) and select SAVE.

Once a profile is saved, staff users can select ORDER DOWNLOAD on the Search Results page, Title Details area, and LISTS area to download in the vendor-specific format.

For consortiums with multiple vendor systems, it’s simple to override the default if necessary. When the ORDER DOWNLOAD page displays, simply choose the "CHANGE FORMAT" option and select your vendor format from the drop down list. The page will re-fresh with the new format.
